Félix Díaz is an Associate Professor of Psychology at New Bulgarian University, after teaching at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) for 18 years and at the American University in Bulgaria for 6 years. He has done extensive research on conversational interaction, with a focus on impaired communication. He has recently published a textbook on qualitative assessment techniques in Speech and Language Therapy and a guideline for dementia caregivers. He is currently working to develop systems and instruments for the pragmatic assessment of language and communication, particularly in dementia.

In this talk Félix Díaz will review and discuss different instruments for the assessment of pragmatic competence in persons with impairments of language and communciation, with a focus on dementia. He will argue for the value of assessment systems that (1) rely on the analysis of samples of conversational interaction representing the everyday life of the patient, (2) promote the functional analysis of active, positive competence, (3) allow for the analysis of adaptation strategies at the levels of the patient, their conversational partner and conversational structure, (4) guide the user through pragmatic categories and theory, and (5) orient the practitioner from the detection and analysis of dysfunction to the formulation of adjusted intervention strategies. He will describe his current work to build an assessment instrument for the assessment of dementia with these properties.
